Dealing with a physical or mental disability can be very challenging, especially for children. Does your child suffer from a disability? If so, your child may be eligible to receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits.
SSI benefits are paid to people with low income and limited resources, who are 65 or older, blind or disabled. When you file for child SSI benefits, the Social Security Administration (SSA) will consider your family's income as well as any income or assets of your child.
To be considered disabled for SSI purposes, your child must have a physical or mental condition, or a combination of the two that meets or equals one of the medical or mental categories, called listings, that the Social Security Administration has developed for child's disability benefits. If your child does not meet or equal one of the categories, there are six domains the Social Security Administration considers. The child must be markedly limited in two domains or extremely limited in one domain. The six domains are Acquiring and Using Information, Attending and Completing Tasks, Interacting and Relating With Others, Moving About and Manipulating Objects, Caring for Yourself, and Health and Physical Well-Being.
There are different rules and regulations for proving a child's disability than an adult's disability The Social Security Administration does not grant benefits to all children with disabilities but will grant benefits to children who have marked and severe physical and mental disabilities.
